She did not want her people tied to my Oath and my Doom, which I agreed with. And... I suppose... it never really occurred to us. It was just never the right time to make it official. There was always something in the way. And then it was time for her to move on.

[Haldos is looking over at their father now, dark eyes so very like his mother's simply stating this. There is a question in here, but it is kept open on purpose.]

I have my duties, the same as she has hers. And there is the Oath to consider, as well.

Will it, or your Doom, touch us?

[They learned of it only last night, speaking to the elf who brought them dinner, and from what they heard, that would be a worry if it was the case even to the smallest degree.]

I do not know. [ He shrugs ]

Your mother must have hoped that by cutting all ties it would pass you by - certainly it seems to have spared you so far... but it has lain dormant for all of us, for the moment. You swore no Oath. You should be fine. But once you go... [ Caranthir looks at them for a long time, memorising faces that he has known for too short a time ] Do not look back.

The sooner we leave, the better, then.

[Haldos, ever the more reasonable between them, sets down his knife.

It is easy, really; the longer they stay, the more bonds will form, even if they attempt not to. And that will make both parts harder - the not looking back and the not being connected enough for the doom to hit them.]

Yes. I would not wait longer than when the next caravan comes through. All going well, that will be within the next few days.

[ Caranthir keeps tight hold of his emotions - this is not the time to explode in rage ]

[They have never been particularly physical people, by nature and upbringing both, so it will take until shortly before their departure that they'll hug him - it will eventually happen, though.

[ OH his breath catches briefly, recognizing her mother in that flash of teeth, and then he nods and turns back to his own meal ]

You are my children. [ He says quietly ] I cannot do much for you, but this, at least, I can do. There is no need for thanks.

[She will not go on it the one time that it was said, to large parts because it will not be repeated. But her words are a touch warmer than they were before. It is strange to think of someone as their father, still, but... to have someone in that spot, it is new and in a strange and backwards way very precious, even though it is someone from whose fate they must run.]

[ He looks up and smiles at her, at both of them, a sharp, brief thing, unpracticed and rusty but no less sincere and nods ]
