[The battle, like any other before it, had certainly taken it's toll on the kingdom. It was hard fought and hard won. Much of the wood lay in ashes at the forest floor, and their losses had been heavy. The Woodland Realm was in deep grief over it's fallen king.

The king's council sent word to Minas Tirith that Legolas should return at once, though they did not mention the reason lest the message fall into the unfriendly hands of a stray Orc pack.

Galion was nearby the great gates when the horn sounded, indicating that someone was coming. He waited for someone in charge to come greet whoever it was, but none came. No doubt the councilors were busy trying to piece the kingdom back together... and though Galion was only in the service sector of the realm, apparently there was no one better around to be there when they opened the doors.]

[Time has passed: a week, perhaps, perhaps a month. Himring remains untaken, but Morgoth's forces continue to press the assault in waves. For the past day, Maedhros has sat in council with his brothers and Fingon in tense discussion of what should be done.

The facts remain these: if they remain in Himring, they shall be cut off from their brethren. If they leave Himring, they have nowhere else to go. The Sindar do not take kindly to the sons of Fëanor and their kin, and if there is yet another Noldor stronghold that would take such burdensome sons, there has been no word of it.

There is a solution, and it is one that Maedhros only presses with greatest reluctance: Fingon must take the majority of their forces and find a way to meet again with Turgon, that the Noldor do not stand divided, while the sons of Fëanor take a small host and vanish into the wilds.

It is reckless. It is admitting defeat. It is a solution he cannot seem to let go of, even once he and Fingon are alone together once more.]

It is not that I wish to be parted from you; I would easier be parted from my remaining hand. But we do not know if Himring shall hold. We have not the food to last much longer, and Morgoth's forces disrupt all trade. Soon it may be a siege.

[Maedhros hesitates, bowing his head.]

I would sooner be parted from you than to lose you as I thought I did: to the Halls and a separation much longer.

[It is the reception before Thorin's coronation; and for such an event, the reinstatement of a king under the mountain, many a guest has come. One of them is a former king himself, who after his abdication in favour of his cousin once-removed and many years in various positions and areas has come to be lord over a small Noldorin realm far to the south.

He has come with his husband, yet for the moment is alone when he suddenly finds himself to the young crown prince and bows his head in greeting, a smile on his lips.]

[AU where Nerdanel visited them frequently in Formenos and they had another son that was born not too long before the Darkening.]

[It takes all his willpower to not clutch their youngest so tightly as to bring harm to him when he returns from the council - not to Formenos, but to Tirion, and he rarely has been so glad that Nerdanel uses every chance to take their sons to Tirion so they may see their friends and maternal grandparents at every option possible.

He has never been so out of sorts, as well, and the child in his arms (Nerdanel gave him to her husband before he left for the Valar's summoning, claiming that she had too much on her hand with the others to look after the baby, but nobody, including Fëanor, really thought that the reason was any other than the hope that it would soften her husband's temper a bit) is the only reason why his steps lead him back to the city. The boy will need food and shelter and care, and... and that is all that he can think of, while he cannot think of his feet or the way or anything else. He walks in a dream, almost, one dark and heavy and full of a darkness deeper than that surrounding them, his feet heavy and the little bundle against his chest seeming like the only thing of life and light in the entire world.

But his feet find their way to the house where Nerdanel and their other sons are staying, and he crosses the treshold and then just... stands there for a long moment, his light dimmed for the first time in his life.

His father is dead.]

[It has been months since Smaug was killed; months since the mountain was reclaimed by the dwarves; months since its king fell in the battle, and not much shorter since word of all this came to Dís.

Yet to pack up a whole settlement and trek it across half of Middle-earth took much longer, and so it is only now that she has arrived at the mountain. That she has spoken to her sons and all others, and set herself up just a little bit... and started to seek out those whom she sees it fit or necessary to pay a visit to.

Or let them come to her. Tauriel is in a middle group, mostly for want of a neutral meeting ground: She is waiting for her in the backroom of a tavern in Dale.]

[Under normal circumstances, this kind of thing would be completely unheard of. The slow ritual of braiding is reserved for between the closest of family — spouses, parents and their children — and certainly not for members of different races. And yet here Tauriel is, with a comb in one hand and Kíli's beads in the other, waiting for him to settle down and cease his squirming so she can set to braiding that thick dark hair of his. She doesn't know the proper dwarven patterns, naturally, and she's sure adding the heavy silver clasps and beads to the traditional elven braids is something of a sacrilege, but right now she doesn't care. She has been banished from her kingdom, its traditions are no longer paramount to her.

She hums a little under her breath as she gets started, smoothing the comb through Kíli's tangles and gently separating it into the sections she'll need.]

[ Archery is one of his passions, and to get to teach it to another, elf or man this little detail matters little, is one of the greatest pleasures. And Legolas is not a terrible teacher at all, not strict, not in the unpleasant way, but he does challenge people time and again and urges them to do their best. It's no different in the case of Bard's son, who is his student now. For the time that Legolas remains with the men to help them rebuild, along with a contingent of elves from Mirkwood.

Gently he nudges Bain to raise his elbow higher, as he pulls the string of the bow. He then stands behind him to check his aim, smoothly moving to the other side next and inspecting his overall stance. All the while expecting the boy to keep it and keep the sting pulled back without a single tremble. ]

Release the arrow when you think your aim true.

Yawning and dumping his things by the door, he lets himself in, going straight to the kitchen to grab a beer and some cold pizza.

[ Oh and ah and many elves have been in a tizzy all around Mirkwood for a visit of most renowned guest. Today, today is the day the balrog slayer comes, Glorfindel the hero who has returned to Middle-Earth today graces Mirkwood with his presence. While not particularly keen on the history of the Noldor, this particular story has reached even a great many ears here and young marchwardens strive to be in the tiptop shape for his arrival, presenting well and behaving even better. Worthy of praise from such a fine elf.

Legolas too is young, and he too acts the part of a marchwarden, even if he's barely half the size of the shortest of them. Except he defends the Kingdom of Green Leaves and its King from the evil touch of the maids, shrieking like possessed as he runs along the winding halls of his father's realm. A great escape- duck here, use the railing to slide all the way down the stairs quicker, then the last stretch to reach the gates - open now, for no threat comes from the forest - and he vanishes amongst the trees. If he's difficult to find in Thranduil's Halls, he becomes impossible to find among trees. Ever restless child of the leaves in which he hides, and which provide him protection from harm and... sight!

However unlike the actual marchwardens, he does not know of the guest coming their way. Fancy looking and very, very bright, in a way he had not seen before ever in his very short life so far. So the sight of him riding along the path is startling, and perched on a high branch Legolas watches him pass by, then after only a moment's consideration he decides to stalk his progress. Like predator hunting prey, a great cat except still lacking the easy grace of such creature, limbs too awkward, motions a little clumsy.

One thought tumbles about in his head: ada will be proud if he intercepts a trespasser for sure! And that is the goal he keeps in mind while moving - quietly, silently as far as he knows, but is he really so quiet? - from branch to branch. ]

[There was something familiar about this place, but Gabriel couldn't quite place it, not yet. Something about the scenery, the light, the scent. Still, it wasn't the place that he had gone to bed and that was enough to set him on his guard. Were he a drinking man he might have put it down to the night that went before, but despite the familiarity even when he woke more he didn't recognise it entirely. It wasn't Thorir's place or the mountain - it wasn't even his old flat in London. Where then?

Racking his brains as he raided the wardrobe for something to wear, he still threw up blanks. The fact that there didn't appear to be electricity didn't register, not after spending so much time in Thorir's mountain in Vegas, although as he dressed he did hunt around for either one of his mobiles. No luck. If this was some sort of prank or weird echo, then someone was going to get it.

Glorfindel was by habit an early riser, but not usually this early, and unkempt for an elf, but not this unkempt. There was something off about the elf that stepped into the corridor, aside from the way that he looked around wildly - lost. His hair was too short, and not full enough even unbrushed, a touch of unease in clothes that were a touch too big for him, something missing from his gaze. Immortality hadn't come to Gabriel yet, and it would take him a while to regain all of Glorfindel's thousands of years.

He let his feet carry him, hoping he'd find somewhere he recognised. At least this place seemed to be more or less abandoned, unless that was the early hour? He came to a place where the memory seemed just out of reach, just beyond touch, if he could just stretch out... Turning around he hunted for something that would trigger the memory, give him the place and found himself turning into someone else, bumping into the dark haired - person.]

Sorry. [He reverted to Quenyan without registering, his forced mother tongue taking over as the memory startled and vanished, the moment lost. Where was he?]

[Not many traveled with Celebrían to the Grey Haven's besides her family and those sailing with her. And even then, only a few were ready to depart Middle Earth forever.

That Elladan had chosen to be one of the people to escort her had been unexpected but not unwelcome. Where they went, they didn't know what to expect but at least she'd have some part of her family with her. He was the one that supported her when they got off the ship and who she relied on when she shied away from those gathered near the docks.

It doesn't take more than a couple weeks for his mother to start showing some improvement. It's slow but compared to how she'd been in Imladris, there is definite improvement.]

So he didn't die after all, hardier than anyone would have assumed. Nor did his nephews, though all three of them were hurt severely, the only one of the four dwarves who had headed to the mountaintop that came out relatively unscathed having been Dwalin.

It takes a while until he can stay awake for longer stretches of time, though, and even longer before he can do so without being drugged. So it is almost a month before one of the healers calls Dwalin to the room that Thorin is resting in with the news that he is awake and fully himself.

He sits in his bed upright when Dwalin arrives, looking thin (for a dwarf, anyway) and exhausted, but completely lucid. A smile creeps onto his features when he sees the other dwarf.]

I wondered how long it would take them to find you.
