[meme] The everyone survived AU
THE ARDA AU MEME

{source}
All the AUs! With classics as the obligatory and all important
> EVERYONE LIVED AU. Maybe you're at Thorin's festive coronation or a drinking game between Boromir and Haldir after the end of the War, or Fëanor and Thingol finally talk to each other. Maybe Belladonna comes with her son on adventures, or Maedhros spends some very awkward hours at Elrond's wedding. U know the drill.
> but let's not forget the staple COFFEESHOP AU either
> or the no less important WHAT IF AU: What if the Silmarils were glowing bunnies? What if Bard hadn't managed to take down Smaug? What if Maeglin had not betrayed Gondolin, what if Galadriel had accepted the One Ring? What if Sam had a giant afro?
> and really any other AUs that you can think of.
As a note, since not everyone has seen BOFA yet and some people care about not being spoiled, please make a note in your top level comment/the subject line of a comment if you might bring up spoilers in threads or don't want to be spoiled, something like "bofa spoilers yes" or "bofa spoilers no".

So Haldos simply replies:] Haleth, chieftain of the Haladin while she lived. [Both peredhel watch Caranthir intently at this, gauging his reaction. They frankly have no exact plan or expectations in coming to Caranthir's place - if it doesn't work, they'll travel south or east, most likely.]
no subject
Haleth's? [ His voice is hoarse with surprise and... wonder, regret, a thousand emotions ]
Yes. I see it now. She is dead then.
[ He had known, although neither of them had lived as husband and wife, the bond was true, and there was a small empty space that opened in his heart when she died, despite the distance of time and space between them ]
no subject
[Hallon looks straight back at the elf before her, not budging by even a fraction - he is taller, which is no surprise, but the reaction kind of is. Those of their people who remembered him never described Caranthir as a man of many emotions past anger. Though then, knowing each other - many do not describe themselves as much different, either. Only more well-contained due to the raising which their mother gave them.]
no subject
Was she happy?
[ He does not say 'I am sorry for your loss', nor does he obviously grieve. Haleth made her own choices, and he made his. They both reconciled to that right at the beginning. ]
no subject
She never regretted the choices that she made.
And was glad for them, though she missed those whom time and choices took from her side. [As far as they could tell.] So for what happiness one can claim in these times, she was.
no subject
Good. I did not either. [ A tiny white lie, because of course he missed her and sometimes wondered if he should have fought harder for her to stay, but only a small one, because they both agreed that her staying would have done neither of them any good in the end. Probably. ]
And the two of you? What did she wish for you?
no subject
[Hallon shrugs, her features scrunching up a bit. Between the two of them, she has always had more of a temper and stronger moods. They don't come out often, but while she agrees with their mother's wish on a cognitive level, it still makes her want to refuse on the inside.
Haldos continues, words clipped and harsh. This is more personal than an outside might think, but it also is something that needs to be said here, because it lays out the grounds on which any relationship with their father can exist.] She didn't tell us where to go, nor what to do; yet that we should stay independent and as safe as we might.
/picks name out of hat
She never was good at forward planning. Still. She told you to look for me. A good place to start. And she told you to stay independent, even better.
So!
You know my history I am sure. She's right, of course. It will be far safer for you if no one knows whose children you are. Probably why she told you to leave. You won't be able to stay here long, either. If my seneschal thought I needed to see you, then Inglor, at least, recognised you. It would not take long before others see it also. But I can start you off, at least. Did you have any plans?
[ ... this is the most words he's said in ages it's exhausting how do his brothers manage? ]
/pets the hat
[Haldos looks over at his sister and both fall quiet for a long stretch of time, simply mulling his words over. The one who finally speaks up again is Hallon.]
We have no plans, yet if you grant us one night, we shall present you with one in the morning.
no subject
Take what time you need. This is your future, after all. I will have rooms prepared and food and drink sent to you if you prefer the privacy.
no subject
[The words are cool and curt, but there is thankfullness in them: For not trying to convince them one way or the other, for not asking too much or too little. To suddenly have a name and face for their other parent is overwhelming enough as it is.
They leave without another word and only a curt bow, and the next time that Caranthir hears from them will be in the morning, when his seneschal approaches him with the question if he wishes to break his fast with his guests.]
no subject
The next morning he does not have to think long on his answer ]
Yes. See that no one disturbs us.
[ They can use his private study ]
no subject
They say that you have dealings with the dwarves.
no subject
Sit. [ He orders ] There is no need to stand on ceremony, and Inglor will see to it that no one disturbs us.
And yes, I do. The trade route runs through my lands, after all.
no subject
We wish to visit them; both to learn more of them and to ask them of the lands behind the Blue Mountains. Can you help us in this?
[aka: We will leave, and leave Beleriand in its entirety, if possible.]
no subject
Easy enough. The next caravan should be passing through within the next three days. They will stop here, and I can arrange a meeting.
no subject
Mother barely spoke of you, and never by name; perhaps she feared to call down your enemies upon us. [Or those that dislike Caranthir and his brothers; the people of Haleth may be secluded and seclusive, but they still have heard enough in attitudes and stories to understand that being related to him wouldn't have made them the most cherished people in Beleriand.] She did not speak of you and herself as ...a pair. Would you tell us about it?
no subject
[ Caranthir shrugs a little - after all, he did not speak of her either, after, and it makes this hard, almost painful, to search for the words to talk about her now. But these are his children, and they deserve that much ]
I found your mother fiery and strong, the only person outside of my brothers and closest advisors who was neither intimidated nor servile towards me. She was not beautiful the way most elves think of beauty. But she was always strong. I enjoyed arguing with her - she was never careless in her arguments but always gave good reasoning for them. We were never formally plighted.
no subject
[They can imagine their mother's side of the argument - a marriage would have tied her down, would have tied her people down. Both she would have hated too much to find joy in the relationship, no matter how much love she would have found in it.
But they hardly know this stranger who is their father, and wonder.]
no subject
She did not want her people tied to my Oath and my Doom, which I agreed with. And... I suppose... it never really occurred to us. It was just never the right time to make it official. There was always something in the way. And then it was time for her to move on.
no subject
[Haldos is looking over at their father now, dark eyes so very like his mother's simply stating this. There is a question in here, but it is kept open on purpose.]
no subject
[ Caranthir nods ]
I have my duties, the same as she has hers. And there is the Oath to consider, as well.
no subject
[They learned of it only last night, speaking to the elf who brought them dinner, and from what they heard, that would be a worry if it was the case even to the smallest degree.]
no subject
Your mother must have hoped that by cutting all ties it would pass you by - certainly it seems to have spared you so far... but it has lain dormant for all of us, for the moment. You swore no Oath. You should be fine. But once you go... [ Caranthir looks at them for a long time, memorising faces that he has known for too short a time ] Do not look back.
no subject
[Haldos, ever the more reasonable between them, sets down his knife.
It is easy, really; the longer they stay, the more bonds will form, even if they attempt not to. And that will make both parts harder - the not looking back and the not being connected enough for the doom to hit them.]
